这本专集集中了塞西尔·巴尔蒙德的作品和思想。塞西尔·巴尔蒙德，一位世界声誉卓著的设计师、结构工程师、作家，同时身兼奥雅那工程顾问有限公司的副总裁。他用数字、音乐、数学作为重要线索重新定义了形式的源起。迄今为止，他与世界最为著名的建筑师们成功创作了许多标志性建筑及设计。最近的项目包括有，与瑞姆·库哈斯合作设计的位于北京的CCTV新楼及位于葡萄牙的波尔图音乐厅以，与丹尼尔·李伯斯金合作的世界贸易中心等。他还曾经在美国哈佛大学建筑研究生院、耶鲁大学建筑学院、宾西法尼亚大学等众多的大学建筑学院中任教或进行讲演，发展了形式生成的基本教义。书中大量的专门论述集中展示了塞西尔·巴尔蒙德和奥雅那高级几何部门创作的业已建成的或正在进行中的作品以及迷人的创作过程。

Cecil Balmond is an internationally renowned structural engineer with multiple identities, like author, professor and Deputy Chairman of Arup. His interest lies in the genesis of form using numbers, music and mathematics as vital sources. And his commitment to architecture and design has led to successful collaborations with major international architects, currently working with Koolhaas on the Concert Hall project in Porto and on the CCTV Headquarters building in Beijing and with Daniel Libeskind on the World Trade Centre. This book shows the intriguing creative process of his works and on going projects, as well as his thinking and ideas on structure and designing.


异规

本书向读者展示了一个全新的审视和构思建筑的起点和角度。它颠覆了先建筑再结构的习惯思维和操作次序，而把结构构件和体系的“异规”作为设计方法的入手点。从这里出发，我们会发现一个令自己欣喜和惊讶的世界。

本书以夹叙夹议的结构展开，即理论的宣示和分析与一组组工程案例相间呈现并相辅相成、互相支持。书中列举的8个案例都是在当代建筑界极具影响的项目，并且在建筑结构上都颇有挑战性。作者在与瑞姆·库哈斯、丹尼尔·李伯斯金、阿尔瓦罗·西扎等建筑大师的合作中，以其创造力使建筑结构及构件精彩地实现并诠释了建筑师的思想。或者说结构本身也是建筑，也述说着建筑思想，而不光是支撑建筑的幕后英雄。

本书的编排也极具特色：文字、草图、图纸、照片交替出现。正如塞西尔本人所说，阅读也有自己的空间和结构形式，他想让此书犹如布鲁斯一样，吟唱与器乐交相辉映、相互对话。

In this book, Balmond looks at 8 projects he completed with Koolhaas/OMA, Libeskind, Siza, van Berkel, and Kulka/Konig, illustrating his creative approach to the field of structural engineering. He makes the theoretical basis of his solutions understandable to the reader and presents his sketches, which serve as a key to his blurring of the borders between architecture and engineering.

The innovative structural designs of Cecil Balmond underpin architectural forms and give them their own integrity. Balmond's collaborative work with architects such as Daniel Libeskind, Rem Koolhaas and James Stirling demonstrates the process of fusion between architecture and his engineering. His structural thinking differs from that of other engineers in his field in its completely new conception of the engineer's contribution to architecture. The plasticity of architectural plans is enhanced through a decisive development of its structural design. The border line between structure and architecture thus becomes increasingly blurred. In this book, the process is explained by reference to eight projects through which the author makes the theoretical basis of his engineering solutions understandable for the reader.
