《INDEX Architecture》的blob里,Greg Lynn有句话
First, I am happy to have things debased and popularized these days, as the disdain for the popular is one quality of architects that I am eager to shed.
说的很直白唉

如果说这种柔性从哲学意义上更倾向于东方的话,那东方人可要惭愧一阵子了。

Greg Lynn's book

“Animate Form”

by Greg Lynn

List Price: $40.00
Hardcover: 203 pages
Publisher: Princeton Architectural Press; Bk&CD-Rom edition (September, 1998)
ISBN: 1568980833
Product Dimensions: 9.1 x 6.9 x 0.8 inches

[Reviews]

Along with Spuybroek and Scottish-Japanese duo Ushida Findlay, Greg Lynn is one of the leading American architect-theorists of the '90s hyper surface or waveform architecture. His second book Animate Form carefully leads you through the antecedents-Duchamp's Nude Descending, Hans Jenny's flow motion cymatics, then the '90s topological turn towards the vectorial flow of spline curves before guiding you through spectacular competition entries such as the 1994 Yokohama International Port Terminal. Lynn will be lecturing at the Royal College of Art's Youtopia series on May 11. See you there!

[Description]

Probably no other contemporary architect has created such a compelling and productive practice through the use of computer technology as Greg Lynn. Employing state of the art animation and special effects software, Lynn transforms space and form into highly plastic and flexible entities. He uses topological geometries to bend, twist, deform, and differentiate structure, challenging preconceived notions of architecture.
Animate Form is a book and interactive CD-ROM of recent architectural projects designed by Form, the office of Greg Lynn. The porjects documented in Animate Form explore the potential of time-based animation techniques to inform architectural design. Lynn's introduction provides a theoretical context for the experimental work that follows. Each project is subsequently explored in detail through text and full color graphics. The CD-ROM, packaged with the book, is an interactive hypertext environment that fully documents the design processes through three-dimensional renderings and animation sequences.

[About the Author]

Greg Lynn has been an Adjunct Associate Professor at Columbia University since 1990. He is presently the Professor of Spatial Conception and Exploration at the ETH in Zürich, the Davenport Visiting Professor at Yale University, and a Studio Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. His office Greg Lynn FORM is working in collaborative partnerships with a variety of architects on a range of projects, including a line of international showrooms for PGLIFE.COM; the Cincinnati Country Day School in Cincinnati, Ohio; the Vision Plan for Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey; the Ark of the World Museum in Costa Rica; and the recently completed Korean Presbyterian Church of New York.
Hani Rashid is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Architecture at Columbia University in New York, and has taught architecture and lectured throughout Europe and the United States. In 1989, along with partner Lise Anne Couture, he formed Asymptote in New York City. Their repertoire ranges from experimental installations and computer-generated environments to building designs and urban planning. Most recently Rashid and Couture designed a large-scale computer-generated environment for the New York Stock Exchange and an accompanying "Theater of Operations" now installed on the floor of the NYSE. Asymptote is also designing the Guggenheim Virtual Museum as a fully interactive multidimensional web-based environment, as well as building projects in San Francisco, New York, and Kyoto.
Max Hollein is the director of the Schirn Kunstahalle, Germany and was the United States Commissioner to the 7th Venice Architecture Biennale.

[Description]

Together with a select group of international students from Columbia University and the University of California, Los Angeles, highly respected architects and architectural theoreticians Hani Rashid and Greg Lynn transformed the United States Pavilion during the Venice Biennale 2000 into a four-week workshop and forum for architectural discourse: a laboratory. Investigating, producing, and reviewing a variety of architectural schemes, the participants demonstrated the practice and direction of a new generation of architects. "Architectural Laboratories" presents the results of this workshop through 10 projects that focus on the themes "The Embryologic House" and "Augmented Architecture." Guest critiques of the students' designs are offered by philosopher and cultural critic Mark C. Taylor, ZKM chairman Peter Weibel, and Max Hollein, the United States Commissioner for the biennale.
Essays by Max Hollein, Greg Lynn, Hani Rashid, Mark Taylor and Peter Weibel.

Folding in Architecture (Architectural Design Profile)

by Greg Lynn (Editor)

About the Author

Greg Lynn is an architect with practices in Los Angeles (FORM) and New York (United Architects). He is also a Professor at the Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien, Davenport Visiting Professor at Yale University (2004) and Studio Professor at UCLA.
Mario Carpo is Head of the Study Centre at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal; Robert Sterling Clark Visiting Professor of Art History at Williams College (2004); and Associate Professor of Architectural History at the School of Architecture of Saint-Etienne, France (on leave).

Product Description:

This seminal book from Architectural Design was originally published in 1993, at a time of crucial change and on the eve of the digital revolution.

It brought together a series of essays that many believe created the favourable environment in which computer-based design could thrive. Considered one of the most influential architecture publications of the 1990s, this book ranks as a classic and in itself is a crucial chapter of history, though one that has been out of print since 1999. This faithful reprinting includes a substantial new introductory essay by Mario Carpo, Head of the Study Centre at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, which examines the impact of the original texts and their ongoing significance. Thereafter, the book is true to its original content showcasing projects by ground-breaking architects such as Greg Lynn, Jeffrey Kipnis, Bahram Shirdel, Frank Gehry and Philip Johnson.

以下是一段有趣的采访,偶尔在网上看到。

hani rashid / asymptote

hani rashid was born in cairo, egypt in 1958 to a british mother
and egyptian father and raised in england and canada
(by the way - hani is the brother of karim rashid).
he received his bachelor of architecture degree in 1983
from carleton university in ottawa, canada and a masters of
architecture degree in 1985 from the cranbrook academy of
art in the usa.
in 1988 he co-founded with partner lise anne couture (*1959),
asymptote, architectural design and research practice,
based in new york.
hani has been a professor of architecture at the columbia
university graduate school of architecture and planning
since 1989. in 1995 he co-developed the school’s advanced
digital design program and has also been taught at numerous
universities including the royal danish academy in copenhagen,
the southern california institute of architecture in los angeles,
the university of lund, sweden, the graduate school of design
at harvard university and the stadleschule in frankfurt.
asymptote has produced a body of work that has placed the
practice at the forefront of architectural and interactive digital design.
asymptote's projects range from spatial experimentation
and installations to building and urban design to computer
generated environments and architectures.
they have created a virtual trading floor for the new york
stock exchange and the guggenheim virtual museum,
which are fully navigable interactive multi-dimensional
architectural environments.
other clients include the osaka gas, the kyoto research park
and knoll international.
hani rashid was also one of two united states representatives
who exhibited in the american pavillion during the venice biennale
in 2000.
the work of asymptote is in various museum collections
including moma, sfmoma, the canadian center for architecture,
the netherlands institute of architecture and at the solomon
r. guggenheim.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
new york, march 5, 2002
------------------------------

what is the best moment of the day?
there are two, very early in my office before anyone gets there,
and the other when my cell phone is turned off and I switch to
private-life mode.

what kind of music do you listen to at the moment?
anything somafm.com streams

do you listen to the radio?
only in NYC taxis.

what books do you have on your bedside table?
a guidebook to beijing, asymptote flux final proof, a apple power book.

where do you get news from?
live news feeds such as newsnow.co.uk

do you read design magazines?
with reluctance.

do you notice how women dress?
do you have any preferences?
yes and yes!

what kind of clothes do you avoid wearing?
tight, shiny, bright, beige, used and labeled.

do you have any pets?
no…however my son has become quite attached to his robot dog.

when you were a child, what did you want to be?
an artist like my dad.

where do you work on your designs and architectural projects?
airplanes, trains, beds, hotels, showers and at the office sometimes.

who would you like to design something for?
airbus the city of rome and any sea frontage in scandinavia.

do you discuss or exchange ideas with other creatives?
absolutely,
with the asymptote team, various NY artists I know and
respect, web designers and crack programmers, museum directors
and curators, other architects and designers like my brother and
his buddies, my students and some people I respect in advertising,
music ( my sister and her buddies) and people involved in the IT and
web industries as well.

describe your style like a good friend of yours would describe it.
adequately neurotic, slightly fanatic and inquisitive as hell.

form follows function in the digital environment?
form follows means, means follow tools, tools yield to desires,
and desire is everything.

which of your projects has given you the most satisfaction?
the virtual trading floor for the NYSE, our office system for knoll,
and our first completed building opening next month in holland.

are there any designer and/or architect, you appreciate a lot?
andre bloc, eric mendelson, bruno taut, vladimir melnikov…
frederic kiesler, georges maciunas and john cage and above all
marcel duchamp (these last three are not really designers or
architects but crucial to our work)

and those still active, are there any particular ones you appreciate?
rem koolhas’ naiveté and zaha hadid’s spirit to name two...

any advice for the young?
curiosity, humility, optimism and lots of gumption will see you
through almost anything.

what are you afraid of regarding the future?
small mindedness, fanatics, the banal, and the insidious voiding of cultures.

(in age of fourteen proust was given an english album "confessions : an album to record thoughts, feelings".
seven years later marcel proust published this questionaire)
in the literary salons in nineteenth century paris, this parlour game was a popular amusement.
for designboom hani rashid has answered these 'old fashioned' questions.
...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

the main traits of my character.
curiosity and a need for space (physical and otherwise).

a quality I desire in a man.
intelligence and generosity and vision.

a quality I desire in a woman.
intelligence and vision and generosity.

what I appreciate most among my friends.
vast horizons, ceaseless optimism and lots of tolerance.

my principal defect.
being on time.

my favorite occupation.
conceptual artist.

my dream of felicity.
endless time spent with the people I love.

what would be the biggest misfortune for me.
no more ideas.

who I would like to be.
a newborn.

were I would like to live.
new york city.

the color I prefer.
silver-blue.

the flower I love.
real.

the bird I prefer.
digital.

my favorite authors.
huysmans, roussel, rabalais and genet.

my favorite poets.

my favorite composers.
terrance riley, john cage and glen branca.

my favorite artists.
tom friedman, sophie calle, maurizio cattelan.

my favorite names.

what I dislike the most.
routines and self inflicted boredom.

the historic characters I dislike most.
evil ones.

the military enterprise I like the most.
absolutely none.

the reformation I appreciate the most.
the human ones.

nature’s gift I would like to have.
harmony, perfection and morphogenesis.

how I would like to die.
quietly and quickly.

my soul's present condition.
sound, secure and whole.

the faults I can bear.
absent mindedness, tardiness and in some, self grandizing.

my motto.
no motto is a good motto.

Greg Lynn的理论基础是屈米那里吗?应该也是建筑内部自发的进化。
除了怪异的Form外他对建筑学做了什么实质贡献?
他公司名字的Form和传统建筑学的Form有什么区别?
不懂就问。疑问

(2)Greg Lynn的贡献可就大了。如是说:
Because of his early combination of degrees in philosophy and architecture, Greg Lynn has been involved in combining the realities of design and construction with the speculative, theoretical and experimental potentials of writing and teaching.
Greg Lynn FORM has defined how architects use computers as a design medium. Projects, publications, research and exhibitions have shaped both the use of advanced technology in design and accelerated its integration into construction. The firm’s reputation for these innovations is undisputed and each new project builds on this achievement. Greg Lynn FORM is at the center of debate and discussion not only in American architecture but in the international arena of design culture. From Time Magazine’s list of “100 Innovators for CNN, from Architecture Magazine to Der Spiegel and the Economist, projects that range from retail interiors to cultural institutions, from public housing to coffee sets, have been awarded, praised, contested and never overlooked.”

(3)个人理解:form其实是动词,它在强调设计生成的逻辑性和介乎the particular 和the general之间的拓扑性 。如是说:Blobs constitute a formal intervention in contemporary discussions of tectonics. That is, blobs intervene on the level of form, but they promise to seep into those gaps in representation where the particular and the general have been forced to reconcile--not to suture those gaps with their sticky surfaces but to call attention to the necessary existence of gaps in representation.
