Introduction and Aims This Masters Degree programme in the School of Architecture allows the opportunity to study a range of subjects at an advanced level in an academic unit with a distinguished reputation in both teaching and research. The Degree Programme is well established, and took on its current format in 1992 with revisions in 1998. Course units may be followed to give a broad education in the area of Advanced Architectural Studies; the degree also gives training in research methods which is particularly relevant to students wishing to pursue further study at the Ph.D. level in the area of architecture or building science. In addition the programme provides the opportunity to specialise in a subject area in which the School of Architecture possesses particular expertise. The degree is not designed to give exemption from R.I.B.A. examinations which are covered by alternative courses. The requirements for the Masters degree may be satisfied by one year's full-time study (September-September). The degree is also available on a part-time basis, normally over a period of two years. Course Structure The Masters Degree Programme is designed to be flexible in its modular nature in order to be responsive to a variety of student needs. To obtain the degree, students must pass a number of taught course units (each worth 15 credits) at the required level. Candidates take course units from the taught course programme during the two semesters (Autumn - September to January, and Spring - February to June). Full time students normally take 4 course units in each semester; part-time students normally take two courses in the same period; overall eight course must be completed. The units in Advanced Study and Research Methods are compulsory. In addition to the taught course units, each student must complete an Advanced Project (worth 60 credits), usually submitted in the form of a dissertation. This may involve practical work in architectural science or computing, or architectural design work. Currently Available Course Units Autumn Semester (September-January): Advanced Study and Research Methods 1 An introduction to the techniques of scholarly research giving knowledge and skills needed for research in all areas of architectural studies. Architectural Science and Computing* This course unit aims to provide the opportunity to update or enhance knowledge and skills associated with the subject areas of architectural science and the use of computers in architecture. Computer Aided Architectural Design This course provides an introduction to the technical background and aesthetic use of computer aided design in architecture. Climate Sensitive Environmental Design This course unit aims to provide the knowledge and skills required to design the environment of buildings and their surroundings in a manner which is sensitive to the climate. The course considers both the impact of the climate on the building as well as the impact of the building process and its resource use, on the climate. Applied Design Project This course unit has the aim of permitting students to apply the knowledge and skills being acquired in other courses forming part of the masters degree programme in building design situations. Students will work on several small scale design projects and be expected to employ computer aided architectural design and environmental design methods. Architecture and the Design Process This course unit is primarily intended for graduate students who have not studied architecture as an undergraduate subject and also for those who wish to further their study of design at graduate level. Practice Management* This course unit addresses issues requiring positive management in architectural practice, including risk management, client management, business management, resource management and job control. Spring Semester (February-June): Advanced Study and Research Methods 2 A course which provides information on techniques and resources suitable for tackling research projects. Advanced C.A.A.D. This course unit is technically oriented; it develops skills and knowledge in the area of application of computational formalisms to the development of CAAD software. The unit is practical in nature with students expected to participate in group project work. Building Environmental Simulation and Analysis The course unit aims to provide a general understanding of, and practical experience in computer modelling software systems which are used for simulating and predicting the environmental performance of buildings. Integrated Design Project This course unit enables the skills, knowledge and techniques assimilated in other course units to be applied in an integrated way to the design of a building and its environment. Renewable Energy* The aim of the course is to introduce the wide range of alternative renewable energy sources which are available so that students are able to appreciate the potential of such sources and have the basic knowledge of how to employ them in appropriate situations. Client Management* This module is designed to develop client handling skills, recognising the central importance of such skills not only to the commercial success of the business, but also to the perception of the architectural profession in society, and the success of the overall project. In addition, students taking the Master of Architectural Studies Degree may take up to 30 credits from other postgraduate course units in the University. Summer (June-September): Advanced Project : A special subject is studied and researched in depth, usually resulting in the production of a dissertation. |
