       In the department there had a unit called BEAU in the 13th floor arts tower run by Ian Ward (Director), Sheila Badger (Project Manager) and Dr Martin Brocklesby (Research Associate); more detail about the three was attached in the following. BEAU - Building Energy Analysis Unit To provide the building industry, through research, education and consultancy, advice on the best solutions to energy and environmental issues related to building design. Environmental Information offered by BEAU BEAU organise training courses for professionals in the construction industry covering most aspects of energy and environmental issues related to buildings. These courses are tailored to the specific requirements of organisations ranging from short lunch-time presentations to whole day events spread over several days. The courses can be held either in the University, the practitioners offices or appropriate conference venue. Continuing Professional Development Certificates are available if required. BEAU is also involved in teaching at both Undergraduate and Post Graduate levels in the School of Architecture and the Management School, University of Sheffield in areas including: Global and Local Environmental Issues. Low Energy Design. Simple Design Tools. Building Types. Renewable Energy Materials and Equipment. Avoidance of Air Conditioning Environmental Assessment of Buildings Energy Management Areas of Research & Operation The Building Energy Analysis Unit within the School of Architecture aims to promote research, teaching and consultancy in the field of energy and environmental issues related to the built environment. There are currently several strands to this work which include: EU Save II Research Programme: Development of a simple energy assessment tool to help designers. EU ERDF Research Programme: Development of self assessment energy packages for businesses. DETR Design Advice: Design advice on environmental issues for new-build and refurbishment projects. Facilities within the Unit Information Centre The Unit, which is housed within the School of Architecture, holds an extensive library of books and journals related to energy and environmental issues. Photocopying can also be carried out in this centre. Access to the Universities Library Catalogue can be obtained from the dedicated computer as well as the Internet. Computer Software An extensive range of computer software for the analysis of buildings is available including the latest addition of the IES-Facet suite of programmes. This suite is capable of carrying out simulations of: Heat load requirements Shadow patterns around and within buildings Building services design Daylight assessments Bulk airflow analysis Artificial lighting design CFD airflow analysis Radiance lighting simulation Building cost analysis Lift simulation Fire evacuation simulation Monitoring Equipment The Unit is able to monitor the performance of buildings and has a good range of data loggers and hand held equipment for the measurement of: Temperature Humidity Lux levels Luminance levels Airflows Electrical power consumption The unit also possesses an infra-red thermal imaging system for establishing heat losses form buildings. History The Building Energy Analysis Unit is the successor to the North of England regional office of the Energy Design Advice Scheme. This scheme was an initiative of Central Government to help the UK meet its carbon dioxide reduction targets for the building sector. During the five years or its operation, EDAS-Sheffield identified more than £17 million per year in energy savings, spread over 1,000 projects, which equates to a reduction in CO2 emissions in excess of 350,000 tonnes. These are savings on completed projects which will occur year on year for the lifetime of the building. They do not include additional savings from the replication of the advice received. Previously the director of EDAS (North of England) Ian has published over 100 papers. Sheila Badger (Project Manager) Tel: 0114 2220374, Email: s.badger@sheffield.ac.uk Sheila Badger is a qualified Architect with wide ranging experience. She has extensive knowledge of building energy and has recently concentrated on the provision of practical advice for energy reduction, in both new and existing buildings. Dr Martin Brocklesby (Research Associate) Tel: 0114 2220373, Email: m.w.brocklesby@sheffield.ac.uk Martin Brocklesby wrote the thesis 'An Environmental Impact Assessment of Frame Materials in the UK Construction Industry' and has undertaken research in a number of other areas including energy use in building operation. Ian Ward was one of the lecturer of the March studies course responsible for the energy management and simulation modules. In his office(units) lots of materials and simulation tools developed by himself could be found. He was one of the lecturers of the advanced research method and looking at "from research to practice". |
