The School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield was established in 1907 and since then has built up an enviable reputation for excellence. It is widely recognised as one of the top schools of architecture in the United Kingdom. It aims to combine an international reputation for research with a vigorous and critical debate about the future of architecture. In the latest government assessments of education, the school was judged as a 5A in research and an 'excellent' in teaching. This is the highest level of achievement achieved by any UK School of Architecture. The School attracts high calibre students on all its courses, creating a stimulating environment for the study and research of architecture. The School has over 400 students and a very lively student society which organises an evening lecture series and social events. Students from Sheffield have consistently won prizes in national and international competitions over the past ten years, including the RIBA Presidents Medals, British Steel and Oasys Awards. .

The Diploma in Architecture has recently been restructured to make it more definitively post-graduate and vocational in its orientation, and also to specifically differentiate it from the undergraduate learning experience. The course acknowledges that architectural practice is a diverse field and prepares for this diversity through a combination of transferable analytic skills in research and synthetic design skills. Students are encouraged to develop a specialist interest in their final year. The course is based around a number (presently six) of vertical studios, each run by a full-time member of academic staff. These studios investigate architectural themes in depth; the themes develop out of the studio leaders' own research interests. The aim is to consider design within the context of rigorous and innovative research. This implies that the product of the studio courses will extend beyond the comprehensive design of a building and into other areas such as consultation, historical analysis, technical innovation or cultural investigation. The vertical studios are supported by a number of other courses that are common to all students.

Fifth year commences with a joint urban study which introduces students to research methodology within the context of Sheffield. Students then join one of the vertical studios. These studios are supplemented by courses in Advanced Environmental Design and Architectural Management, the latter of which forms the introduction to the RIBA Part 3 recognised Certificate in Professional Practice. Humanities in the fifth year is delivered through forum sessions in which distinguished architects and critics are invited to address a specific architectural issue. Fifth year students also work on a 10,000-15,000 word dissertation, which is tutored by a chosen member of staff.

Sixth year commences with short design projects, which often use real clients and briefs. The aim is to provide skills in brief management, client consultation and live presentation. After this students join one of the vertical studios. Normally this will be different from the one chosen in fifth year, but in some circumstances students will be allowed to stay with the same studio. The sixth year design project is developed to a more resolved and thorough level than the fifth year, and is supported by an in-depth design report which covers the background research and the chosen design methodology, as well as analyses of the brief and site. In addition, students prepare for a technical report through intensive masterclasses run by leading experts in specialist technical areas.

Following completion of the Diploma in Architecture, which brings with it exemption from RIBA Part 2, students may develop their dissertation into a 20,000 word Masters thesis, which is normally submitted in the spring following completion of the Diploma. Successful candidates are awarded the degree of MArch.

The Certificate in Professional Practice, which gives exemption from Part 3 of the RIBA Examination, is presently only open to students who have graduated from the Sheffield Diploma course. Preparation for the examination is carried out during the final year in professional practice, and consists of a number of three-day seminars and revision sessions. Examination is by submission of case study and appraisal of professional experience, together with an office based examination. The University of Sheffield have entered a partnership agreement with De Montfort University to share the delivery of the seminars. This consortium will enable the course to attract some of the leading experts in the field.

(all above are copied from the website: www.shef.ac.uk)

***about what I heard***
Sheffield is one of the best university in the field of architecture (architecture design). The courses are well orgainzed. There are 6 studios in the diploma program. Most of the stuido leaders are architects.

I will paste more information about the diploma of Architecture soon.

I am studying in Sheffield now, in the diploma in architecture leading to Master of architecture. Sorry, I don't know the details about the Landscape. you can check the website: www.shef.ac.uk.

To apply the university, you need to contact the department. because it may be different every year. Last year, I sent the profolio, TOEFL, personal statement, recommendation letters and the transcripts.

The Sunday Times University Guide has named Sheffield as ‘UK University of the Year’.

According to the Sunday Times, the award

"recognises excellence in higher education over the past 12 months not based solely on league table position, but assesses a range of qualities including teaching, the overall academic robustness of an institution, the student experience and the university's role on regional, national and world stages. Sheffield does exceptionally well in all of these areas. Twenty-six subjects at the University of Sheffield have now been given top ratings by the Quality Assurance Agency a record few institutions can match."

Sheffield's dropout rate is also identified as one of the lowest in Britain at 5.3%. Only four universities are projected to lose fewer students before the end of their courses. The university's track record in all aspects of engineering is one of the finest in the country and its research is world class. Chemistry at Sheffield has produced four Nobel prize winners; two in the past decade. Excellence in Engineering has resulted in world-class research links with companies such as British Aerospace, Rolls Royce, and most recently, the Boeing Company.

This year alone, the university has risen 13 places in The Sunday Times league table, to be ranked tenth overall in the UK.

Professor Blundell Jones

was trained as an architect at the Architectural Association in London, from 1966 to 1972. He has been involved in practice, criticism and teaching for most of his professional life, but the balance between these activities has gradually changed in favour of a concentration on architectural history and theory. In 1973-74 he wrote his first book on the German architect Hans Scharoun (1893-1972), and he has remained a leading expert on this area of German Architecture, producing a second book on Scharoun and another on his colleague and mentor Hugo Häring (1882-1958). After some experience of practice and of part-time teaching in London, he was appointed Assistant Lecturer at Cambridge in 1978, and ten years later he joined the Architecture Department of the South Bank Polytechnic, now South Bank University, as Principal Lecturer in charge of history and theory, being promoted to Reader in 1992. He was appointed Professor at Sheffield in August 1994.
Professor Blundell Jones has enjoyed a close working relationship with The Architectural Review and other leading architectural magazines including Spazio e Societa, for which he is British correspondent. He has published numerous articles on historical and theoretical subjects besides criticising and analysing contemporary work. He received the CICA Award for the 'Best periodical of the last three years' in June 1985, and was made 'Architectural Journalist of the Year' in 1992 for articles on Louis Kahn and on Authenticity in the Architects Journal. He has written extensively on the English Arts and Crafts movement, on the Swedish architects Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz, on the German firm Günter Behnisch and partners, and on the recent architectural movement in Graz, Austria resulting in the book Dialogues in Time. His interest in the relationship between buildings and society has prompted contacts with anthropologists, and he anticipates further inter-disciplinary work of this kind in developing a theory of architecture.

Professor Blundell Jones sits on Research and Policy committees and is Chair of the Teaching Committee in the School of Architectural Studies. He served on teaching and appointments committees in his previous appointment at South Bank University, and was for many years a member of the Faculty of Architecture and History of Art at Cambridge. He is also a member of the international architectural critics organisation CICA, and of the editorial board of the periodical Architectural Research Quarterly.

I am studying the Diploma in architecture. It is for 2 years. I have never said it is just 9 months. 9 months are the time for you to write the thesis to apply the Master degree. It is out of school and you can post the file to the school. So, diploma course is 2 years. ( I am not taking the Master course). you must know, the master program can offer the RIBA part 2. It means you can't become an architect in UK.

English, you can have the exam now or before the deadline.

maybe you can stay if you want. you just need 1 year experience to apply the RIBA part III. In the master of architecture studies, over half of the are Chinese. most of the others are overseas. I don't know whether there is any local students in the program. Of course, 1 year course is quite good. At least you will be very cool when you return to China with the UK master. I think you need to know what do you want to study. There is no or few design project in Master course.

MASTER OF ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES
(Advanced Architectural Studies)

Modular taught course degree programme (full or part-time)

Introduction and Aims
This Masters Degree programme in the School of Architecture allows the opportunity to study a range of subjects at an advanced level in an academic unit with a distinguished reputation in both teaching and research. The Degree Programme is well established, and took on its current format in 1992 with revisions in 1998.
Course units may be followed to give a broad education in the area of Advanced Architectural Studies; the degree also gives training in research methods which is particularly relevant to students wishing to pursue further study at the Ph.D. level in the area of architecture or building science. In addition the programme provides the opportunity to specialise in a subject area in which the School of Architecture possesses particular expertise. The degree is not designed to give exemption from R.I.B.A. examinations which are covered by alternative courses.
The requirements for the Masters degree may be satisfied by one year's full-time study (September-September). The degree is also available on a part-time basis, normally over a period of two years.

Course Structure
The Masters Degree Programme is designed to be flexible in its modular nature in order to be responsive to a variety of student needs.
To obtain the degree, students must pass a number of taught course units (each worth 15 credits) at the required level. Candidates take course units from the taught course programme during the two semesters (Autumn - September to January, and Spring - February to June). Full time students normally take 4 course units in each semester; part-time students normally take two courses in the same period; overall eight course must be completed. The units in Advanced Study and Research Methods are compulsory.
In addition to the taught course units, each student must complete an Advanced Project (worth 60 credits), usually submitted in the form of a dissertation. This may involve practical work in architectural science or computing, or architectural design work.

Currently Available Course Units

Autumn Semester (September-January):

Advanced Study and Research Methods 1
An introduction to the techniques of scholarly research giving knowledge and skills needed for research in all areas of architectural studies.
Architectural Science and Computing*
This course unit aims to provide the opportunity to update or enhance knowledge and skills associated with the subject areas of architectural science and the use of computers in architecture.
Computer Aided Architectural Design
This course provides an introduction to the technical background and aesthetic use of computer aided design in architecture.
Climate Sensitive Environmental Design
This course unit aims to provide the knowledge and skills required to design the environment of buildings and their surroundings in a manner which is sensitive to the climate. The course considers both the impact of the climate on the building as well as the impact of the building process and its resource use, on the climate.
Applied Design Project
This course unit has the aim of permitting students to apply the knowledge and skills being acquired in other courses forming part of the masters degree programme in building design situations. Students will work on several small scale design projects and be expected to employ computer aided architectural design and environmental design methods.
Architecture and the Design Process
This course unit is primarily intended for graduate students who have not studied architecture as an undergraduate subject and also for those who wish to further their study of design at graduate level.
