The top university in each table scores 100 points, half of which are awarded for the teaching quality ratings carried out by the Quality Assessment Agency. The official research assessments are worth a maximum of 30 points, while the remaining 20 are awarded for the average A-level grades of undergraduate entrants in 1999. Column one: Teaching Quality Assessment (TQA). The maximum TQA is 24. Where denoted, E stands for excellent, S for satisfactory and HS for highly satisfactory. Column two: Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). Gives a quality rating of 5s=star (top), 5, 4, 3a, 3b, 2 or 1 (bottom). Column three: also RAE. Each letter denotes the proportion of staff included in the assessment, from A (almost everyone) to F (hardly anyone). Column four: shows the A level score from the average of new students. Each student's three best grades at A level or AS level are converted into a numerical score using the following values: A Level: A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4, E=2, AS Level: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1
