Lova has a lot good comments.

To answer Brianmoon's initial questions:

1.To understand what/how farmer want to live, don't go and ask the "leaders", go ask farmers themselves!!!!

2. after you get some sense from farmers. calculate how many of them want 100m2 house, how many of them want 150m2, and how many of them want 200m2? clearly this will direct you to design how many and what types of house types farmers want.

3. many other calculations can be done in this way, so i omit the explanation.

4. Note: many farmers used to live in their own house, 3-4 floors.(rich farmers), or 1-2 floors (poor ones). about this u must take into account of their "customer living style". this is directly relate to the "land-loving" mentality of farmers. if their house is directly tie to land, they are happy. so you may want to design a series of "townhouse"(连排式公寓） so that u have the 容积率，and also the 扎根于土地的房子。many farmers want for a whole life is a house only for themselves, and the ones to show their well being.
