I had my first formal introduction yesterday afternoon. The director Shane gave us a rough introduction about our course. Almost the same as what I wrote in the last part. First project start s from March to July and second starts from August to Nov. the final project is the most important one and has the longest period from December to the middle of next year (including a summer holiday). The final project is divided into 2 stages. The first one ends with a rough presentation about your design projects and essays and the second stage is for refining the first stage and ends with an formal exhibition with about an hour presentation for each candidate.
Urban architecture laboratory is a master degree by research. But unlike other research program, it is not just about writing essays. Project design takes an important part of this course. So it is better to say that this course is the combination of design and essay, discovering some theory and use it immediately in design so that the theory and design can compensate each other.
There is no rigid requirement for the whole course. It more depends on yourself especial in the finally project. So it is suitable for students who have strong independent research ability.
This semester’s research focuses on shrinking city that is common phenomenon in many developed countries but rarely happens in China currently. Two small towns have been selected as the case study. Actually except UAL, part of fourth year and final year undergraduate students and some students from landscape will do the same project in this semester. We will discuss together but develop our research separately. I just took part in an undergraduate seminar last evening. They finished a trip to these 2 towns. So the seminar was mainly about their observations and basic materials such as plan, elevations, 3d models collected by them.
I had a conversation with 2 of my classmates who have been in RMIT for a long period. Both them are graduated here and are professor assistants for undergraduate students. They gave me some background knowledge about architecture education here.
From the university’s name—RMIT, the architecture school here seems to be more technological. However, RMIT’s architecture school concentrates more on design rather then technology compared to university of Melbourne. So they think RMIT and Uni of Melbourne represent two different kinds of architectural education in Melbourne. R is more designing, experimenting and M is more practical and commercial. Traditionally they are rivals to each other.
That is what I know until today. To be continued later.
