       To 闻道: Upon your question, I think our discussion might be going too far from current topic title, which only involves in school application. I am afraid people will chase us out if we keep going. So I would like to say sorry about distorting the topic, at first. You know, the salary levels in different regions will have a big difference. The most expansive areas in nation wide include New York, Chicago, San Francisco (Bay Area), Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Diego, and some cities in Florida, etc. Most of them are big cities, and also have the most prestigious firms in. So I think people will more like to compare the salary levels in those areas. I found two good websites you can search useful information. The first one is http://www.salary.com , you can find the specific architectural title's salary in certain area. From the title description, you will easily figure out which title you can hold base on your experience and education. The second one is http://www.homestore.com/Moving/Tools/SalaryCalc.asp . You can compare certain amount of salary with the equal value of the amount in another city. For example, like you mentioned the couple who earned $45K in Bay Area (Let's suppose them in S.F or San Jose), comparing with the area I am living (Orange, CA), it will be equal to $26K( San Jose), or $21K ( S.F). So I think they are really under paid base on my experience. I graduated about 2 years ago with my initiated salary at $42K in a pretty big office with more than 120 people in Los Angeles, then I switch to a medium sized firm, which I am current in, with $55K. I think I might have different situations as those guys you mentioned. Since I had 6 years' experience in China, the salary I got here has already considered my Chinese experience. The title I am holding is Sr. Designer. So upon personal experience and information other people told me, if you want to earn more, you have to jump among firms (Tiao Cao). But you also have to be careful on that, before you really get your Green Card. I feel there are so many factors will affect your life. When I was in China, everybody was thinking about going abroad to get good education and learn from western masters. But after you get here, you have to face to the reality: how you can make living. Who will sponsor you to get H-1B or Green Card, if you want to stay? Where you can afford a house, if you want to have a family? What you can do, if you got laid off? Most of time, money might be the issue, but on the other hand, it also hard for an architect to make a big money here. I had several young colleagues graduated from Harvard, Yale, and Cornell when I was in previous firm. Most of them came from rich families, but they still have a big debt to pay. Unlike the other majors in famous universities, which graduates will have higher salary than the students coming from normal universities, the young architects' salaries are all in one level, no matter which university you graduated from. That mean you paid more on education, but earn the same in your job, for those star university graduates. So that is kind of dilemma those guys have here. The sound degree is just the key to open good firm's door, not a check book you can write a big money on. The reason I talk this, I think, is still good for those people in choosing schools. If I were you guys, a talented architectural student, I would select the schools with good quality but less tuition, such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, UIUC, U of Michigan, etc. rather than those sound names Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Princeton, etc. |
